Meta Platforms Inc. announced on Friday that it is working with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to develop advanced machine intelligence (AMI) that can use human reasoning to perform tasks like translating, aiming to support the "underserved" languages in artificial intelligence models.

The company said it is seeking partners for its Language Technology Partner Program that can contribute over 10 hours of speech recordings along with the transcriptions, written texts of more than 200 sentences, and sets of sentences translated into various languages. The linguistic material is set to be used for integration into AI models for speech recognition and machine translation, which will be open sourced and "freely available."

Apart from the Language Technology Partner Program, Meta also announced an open-source benchmark for machine translation, which will evaluate the AI translation models and will be available in seven languages.
