The European Union (EU) is considering imposing tariffs on digital services provided by tech companies from the United States in response to President Donald Trump's duties targeting European exports, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.

According to the report, the EU's tariffs could target "billions of dollars" worth of digital services that US tech giants sell on the European market. Three unnamed European officials stated the bloc is currently considering tougher countermeasures against the US due to the lack of progress in trade negotiations with the Trump administration. France was mentioned as one of the member countries in favor of slapping tariffs on US digital services, while Italy opposed the plan.

A second anonymous official stated the EU is worried about the US expanding tariffs to include pharmaceutical products and other goods. The bloc could reach an agreement to impose partial duties on US digital services as a compromise and in response to Trump's protectionist trade policies.
