United States Representative from Louisiana Mike Johnson (pictured) garnered sufficient votes on Friday to continue in his role as Speaker of the US House of Representatives after two House Republicans switched their votes to favor him.

Johnson obtained a majority of all the votes that were cast, securing support from 218 out of the 435 members of the House, matching the threshold necessary for victory. Democratic Party candidate House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries secured 215 votes.

In the initial count, House Republicans Keith Self, Thomas Massie and Ralph Norman did not vote for Johnson, causing him to lose. Prior to the vote for speaker, Johnson expressed confidence to reporters about retaining his position, also thanking for the endorsement from US President-elect Donald Trump.
