Germany aims to secure €4.7B submarine deal for NATO
The German government plans to acquire four U212CD submarines for €4.7 billion ($5 billion) to bolster NATO's northern flank defenses, according to an AFP source in the parliamentary budget committee on Friday.
The source from the parliament said Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has submitted a spending request for these submarines, produced by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. Germany previously ordered two submarines in collaboration with Norway, but these additional units are believed vital to meet NATO's updated security demands amid heightened tensions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The significant expenditure is not part of the current budget planning, requiring parliamentary approval.
"We are treating the proposal to purchase additional submarines with particular attention because of its importance for security policy but also because of the high level of funds required," the source said.
