Amy Pope, Deputy Director General of the United Nations migration agency, was elected on Monday to lead the organization over the next five years from October 1. Pope will become the first woman to lead the International Organization for Migration (IOM) later this year.

"I am ready to work with ALL our member states and global partners to unleash the opportunities provided by effective, orderly, and humane migration," Pope wrote in a Twitter post commenting on her appointment. The IOM manages services and gives advice concerning migration to governments and migrants, including internally displaced persons, refugees, and migrant workers.

Starting this fall, Pope will head the IOM after a successful campaign against her former boss Antonio Vitorino. Pope previously served as a senior advisor to United States President Joe Biden, who supported her candidacy.
