The United States Supreme Court upheld on Friday the legislation aiming to ban the social media app TikTok unless its Chinese owner ByteDance Ltd. divests it. The ruling was unanimous and came just two days ahead of the deadline given to ByteDance to sell the platform.
TikTok's immediate fate is unclear. The app will not be banned from the US market immediately but new users will not be able to join from next week. US President-elect Donald Trump, who will be inaugurated on Monday, supported shutting the platform down during his first term. However, he has since changed his mind, reportedly considering an executive order to keep it running.
