American ride-hailing company Uber Technologies, Inc. announced on Monday it decided to shut down its Uber Eats operations in eight countries due to failing to become one of the biggest online food delivery operators in these markets.

The Uber spokesman stated that Uber Eats will, therefore, be discontinued in "the Czech Republic, Egypt, Honduras, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, and Uruguay, and to wind down the Eats app and transition operations to Careem in UAE. This continues our strategy of focusing our energy and resources on our top Eats markets around the world." He added that these markets represent 1% of Eats gross bookings and 4% of Eats adjusted core earnings losses in the first quarter of 2020.

Uber Eats will be discontinued by June 4 while in UAE, operations will be transferred to its wholly-owned subsidiary Careem that is primarily working in the Middle East.
