Probe opened into UK statistic office over flawed data
The UK government has launched an independent investigation into the Office for National Statistics (ONS) following concerns over inaccurate and delayed economic data, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.
Led by former civil servant Sir Robert Devereux, the review will assess the ONS's leadership, culture, and organizational structure after internal fixes failed to resolve issues. The ONS has pledged cooperation with the review and will soon release a strategic business plan outlining priorities.
Errors in key datasets, such as employment figures and GDP calculations, have raised alarms, with the Bank of England warning that unreliable data hampers economic policymaking. The agency previously halted producer price-related publications.
