Pope Francis made a surprise appearance at Saint Peter's Square in the Vatican on Sunday after being hospitalized for weeks over double pneumonia.

The 88-year-old pope greeted the crowd from a wheelchair, in what was his first public appearance after being discharged from the hospital two weeks ago.

"Good Sunday to everyone. Thank you very much," he said briefly. The pontiff's latest health crisis was previously described as "critical," but the pope managed to recover.
