Pope Francis was laid to rest at Rome's Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore after a funeral Mass in St. Peter’s Square, the Vatican announced on Saturday.

Choosing simplicity over tradition, Francis became the first pope in over a century to be buried outside the Vatican. The fifth-century basilica, known as one of Francis' favorite places of prayer, already holds the tombs of seven other popes.

His decision reflects a lifelong preference for humility and a closer connection to the people.
