The British FTSE 100 index closed lower on Friday the last trading session of a turbulent year. At the close, the index was 0.81% lower, with Persimmon decreasing by 2.31%. However, the index closed the year 0.66% higher.

The UK economy started 2022 still struggling to emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic, with persistent bottlenecks in China and other constant supply disruptions. In addition, the year was marked by political crises involving former PMs Boris Johnson and Liz Truss and the more recent mini-budget turmoil.

At 1:28 pm ET, the British pound was down by 0.17% to go for $1.20458.
