Netanyahu calls for probe in wake of Shin Bet leak
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is calling for a "thorough" investigation into the Shin Bet's Jewish Department following a leaked recording by Ayala Hasson, his office announced. The recording, described as "a serious threat to democracy," reportedly revealed the department's arrest of citizens without evidence.
Netanyahu's office emphasized that such actions violate democratic principles, warning against attempting to establish a "shadow government" within the country. "Only in dark regimes does the secret service operate in this dangerous manner," the statement read.
In a separate development, Netanyahu also rescinded the appointment of former naval chief Eli Sharvit as Shin Bet head just one day after initially naming him to the position.
