Leader of Germany's Christian Social Union (CSU), Friedrich Merz, is expected to be elected new chancellor on May 6, the Tagesspiegel reported on Friday, citing information from Berlin government circles.
According to the report, the parliamentary groups in the Bundestag could start their discussions on May 5. Before that, the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have to approve the coalition agreement.
Merz confirmed that the CSU, CDU and SPD reached a coalition deal earlier this week, stressing that the new coalition has "a strong plan" for Germany and vowing to "help shape change in the world" in the country's interest.
