Merz announces cabinet nominations

Incoming German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Monday the Christian Democratic Union's (CDU)/Christian Social Union in Bavaria's (CSU) nominations for cabinet positions in the next government.

Merz nominated Johann Wadephul as foreign minister, named Katharina Reiche economy minister, picked MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group CEO Karsten Wildberger for the role of digital minister and tapped Patrick Schnieder to lead the Transport Ministry. Furthermore, Nina Warken was nominated as health minister and Karin Prien as education minister.

Merz is set to be formally elected chancellor on May 6 after his alliance struck a coalition deal with the Social Democratic Party (SPD).
