Saudi Arabia sent Khaled al-Faisal, governor of Mecca, to Kuwait City on Monday for talks with the country's officials, as it is one of the few Persian Gulf nations that didn't follow suit in the Qatar diplomatic crisis to sever ties with the emirate. An official from Oman, another neutral country in the dispute, meanwhile arrived in Doha. The governments of Kuwait and Oman are emerging as negotiating parties.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Libya, the Maldives and Mauritius severed all ties and mostly gave notice to Qatari diplomats and citizens to leave. Iran responded quickly and attributed the alleged plot to cut ties with Qatar to United States President Donald Trump, who recently toured the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the US Central Command told the Associated Press it will continue to use the Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar for flight missions to Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. The army has 10,000 troops stationed at the site. The White House said President Donald Trump would pursue dialogue with all parties involved in order to "deescalate" the situation.
