Japan has officially proclaimed on Sunday Crown Prince Akishino (pictured) the first heir to the Imperial House of Japan.

"I deeply ponder the responsibility of Crown Prince and will discharge my duties," Akishino said at a ceremony in the Tokyo Imperial Palace.

The country's emperor Naruhito was inaugurated on May 1, 2019, after former Emperor Emeritus Akihito stepped down.
