United States Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) representatives investigated the key payment and contracting systems of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) this week, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

According to the report, the DOGE representatives were examining the technology of the payment systems and the spending that goes through them, looking for signs of what they might consider fraud or waste. The investigation was also looking at how the agency is staffed and analyzed its organizational design. The CMS official cited in the report said that the DOGE was working in coordination with two senior CMS veterans to "see where there may be opportunities for more effective and efficient spending in line with meeting the goals of [US] President [Donald] Trump."

Elon Musk's department previously also reportedly gained access to the Small Business Administration (SBA) systems and sensitive US Treasury data.
