Denmark may ditch US defense deal under 'special circumstances'
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said on Monday that his country may scrap its defense cooperation agreement under "quite special circumstances," such as the US leaving NATO.
Rasmussen stressed that this doesn't mean the agreement on the presence of American troops in Denmark signed in 2023 will be terminated but pointed out it can "well be terminated in a manner other than by denunciation or mutual agreement" in case of "quite special circumstances." He also stressed that the membership of the two countries in NATO was the "crucial prerequisite" for the deal, but pointed out there are no signs the US plans to leave the alliance.
Relations between the two countries have been strained due to US President Donald Trump's constant threats of annexing Greenland since assuming the presidency.
