Australia won't impose tariffs on US goods, Albanese says
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that his government won't respond to United States President Donald Trump's baseline 10% tariff imposed on Australian exports to the US.
"Our government will not be seeking to impose reciprocal tariffs," Albanese told reporters shortly after Trump unveiled his long-teased "Liberation Day" trade policy. He described Trump's move as "completely unwarranted," adding that the tariffs "have no basis in logic and go against the basis of our two nations' partnership." Albanese said that Australia has a free trade agreement with the US, which contains "dispute resolution mechanisms," noting, however, that he'd rather not use them.
"We want to resolve this issue without resorting to using these, as we do support continued constructive engagement with our friends in the US," he said. "But, the Australian people have every right to view this action by the Trump administration as undermining our free and fair trading relationship," Albanese added.
