UN welcomes 'constructive' signs from new Syrian authorities
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representative in Syria, Gonzalo Vargas, reported Friday that the new interim authorities have expressed willingness to collaborate with the agency. Following the recent departure of Bashar al-Assad, they have emphasized the importance of UNHCR's continued presence to address the country's immense humanitarian needs.
Vargas highlighted assurances from the authorities regarding the agency’s security and their appreciation for its work amid years of conflict and displacement. "[We have had] some contact with the interim authorities", he said to reporters while noting "the initial signals that they are sending us are constructive."
As per Vargas the new Syrian authorities “will provide [them] the necessary security to carry out those activities" as they want the agency to remain in their territory and “appreciate” the job done “for many years.”
