United States President Donald Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law on Wednesday, the first bill he approved after becoming the 47th president on January 20.

The bill instructs the US Department of Homeland Security to order detention of non-citizens charged with crimes such as burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting. It also allows individual states to sue the federal government for alleged failures to enforce immigration policies.

Trump previously promised to deport illegal immigrants and also issued an executive order designating Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
