United States Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell told reporters on Wednesday that the central bank was not allowed to own Bitcoin under the Federal Reserve Act and would not be seeking to change the law.

"That's the kind of thing for Congress to consider," Powell pointed out, stressing that the bank does not want to push for a change in existing regulation.

Powell had previously criticized Bitcoin calling it "unsuitable" for currency and "too volatile" to be a competitor for the US dollar.
