House Republicans unanimously agreed to support Speaker Mike Johnson in extending his leadership over the lower congressional chamber on Wednesday, sources told Politico.

United States President-elect Donald Trump was rumored to have endorsed Johnson as the House speaker during his meeting with House Republicans earlier today. The news comes after the Republican Party secured control of the House of Representatives for another two years, giving the party an upper hand in Congress after also winning the majority in the Senate.

South Dakota Senator John Thune was selected to lead the upper congressional chamber following the second round of votes against Texas Senator John Cornyn.
