ICC to review Israel's war crimes jurisdiction appeal
The Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) overturned on Thursday a previous decision rejecting Israel's challenge to the Court's jurisdiction in the situation concerning the State of Palestine. The case will now return to the Pre-Trial Chamber for further deliberation, halting the arrest warrant process for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
The ICC said in a statement that the Pre-Trial Chamber had initially dismissed Israel's challenge as premature. However, the Appeals Chamber found that the lower chamber made a mistake by not fully considering Israel's argument.
The decision comes as the country faces ongoing international criticism for its daily strikes in Gaza and incursions into the West Bank. Previously, the Spanish government decided to suspend a €7.5 million arms deal with Israel, which allowed Spain to purchase ammunition from the country.
