Dow falls 290 pts at close as S&P 500 slips from record highs

Major US stock markets closed mostly lower on Wednesday. The Dow Jones fell more than 290 points, and the S&P 500 retreated into negative territory after hitting fresh records earlier in the session.

During the day, the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) reported that mortgage applications in the United States increased by 11% in the week ending September 20. Meanwhile, Meta presented its new Quest 3S VR headset, and the Census Bureau reported that new home sales in the country went down 4.7% in August.

At the close, the Dow Jones lost 0.70% or 293 points, with Amgen declining 5.41%. The S&P 500 declined 0.19%, as global Payments dropped by 6.59%. However, the Nasdaq 100 managed to add 0.14%, with Constellation Energy leading the gains, improving by 3.68%.

On the currency front, the euro was down by 0.48% against the dollar at 3:58 pm ET, selling for $1.11264.
