Apple may expand Brazil factory to avoid Asia tariffs
Apple Inc. is allegedly considering expanding its operations at the Foxconn factory in Jundiai, Sao Paulo, to offset surging production costs in Asia. According to a Brazilian Exame magazine report published on Friday, the move comes as new tariffs introduced by United States President Donald Trump hit major Apple suppliers in China and India.
Currently, over half of Apple's smartphone shipments originate in China, which has not only suffered high reciprocal tariffs on April 2 but today introduced its own 34% response. India, which recently doubled its device production between 2024 and 2025, will also be affected, facing a 26% levy.
Foxconn’s Jundiai facility, a long-time Apple partner, already assembles base models of the iPhone 13 through 15 and was recently cleared to manufacture the iPhone 16. Brazil has received a modest 10% duties on exports to the US from Trump, making it a viable alternative for the tech darling.
